Founded in 1971 by business professor Klaus Schwab at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum (WEF) is a not-for-profit organization that has become famous for its annual meetings at the end of January in Davos, Switzerland.
With participation of political and business leaders of the world, the annual meeting provides an open, inclusive and highly publicized venue for discussing world economic issues and attempting to resolving international conflicts. The meeting has attracted broad international media participation and widely covered by new media.
In recent meetings, a consistent message conveyed by world political and business leaders has been a commitment to globalization despite recent difficulties in world economic development.
For example, for his keynote speech “Jointly Shoulder Responsibility of Our Times, Promote Global Growth” at the annual meeting in 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping received positive response for showing faith in economic globalization and stressing China’s positive commitment to economic globalization, especially through the Belt and Road Initiative. It was on this occasion that Xi promoted the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) hosted in Beijing in May 2017.
Funded by membership fees, the Forum is an independent and impartial international organization for public-private cooperation. The mission of the Forum is stated as “committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional, and industry agendas.”
Themes for recent meetings include “New Global Context” (2015), “Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution” (2016), “Responsive and Responsible Leadership” (2017), “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World” (2018) and “Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
